The selective effect of slag is believed to be due to its ability to reduce Tc(VIII) to the less soluble Tc(IV) species. Addition of ground blast furnace slag to the grout is shown to reduce the effective diffusivity of technetium by several orders of magnitude retention of technetium is improved by decreasing the more ยป waste loading in the grout or by increasing the proportion of blast furnace slag in the grout dry mix. These open-hearth furnaces transmit heat via radiation to get metals to a temperature. Conventional portland cement and fly ash grouts are shown to be very effective for retention of hydrolyzable heavy metals (including lead, cadmium, uranium, and nickel), but are marginally acceptable for retention of radioactive /sup 99/Tc (which is present in the waste as the highly mobile pertechnate anion). Often used for pre-heating, slot forging furnaces resemble a pizza oven. Mixed low-level radioactive and chemically toxic process treatment wastes from the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant are stabilized by solidification in cement-based grouts. ![]() Authors: Gilliam, T M Spence, R D Evans-Brown, B S Morgan, I L Shoemaker, J L Bostick, W D Publication Date: Research Org.: Oak Ridge National Lab., TN (USA) OSTI Identifier: 6847553 Report Number(s): CONF-880903-17 ON: DE88011411 DOE Contract Number: AC05-84OR21400 Resource Type: Conference Resource Relation: Conference: Spectrum '88: international topical meeting on nuclear and hazardous waste management, Pasco, WA, USA, Other Information: Portions of this document are illegible in microfiche products Country of Publication: United States Language: English Subject: 12 MANAGEMENT OF RADIOACTIVE AND NON-RADIOACTIVE WASTES FROM NUCLEAR FACILITIES 11 NUCLEAR FUEL CYCLE AND FUEL MATERIALS LEACHING EVALUATION LIQUID WASTES SOLIDIFICATION PORTSMOUTH GASEOUS DIFFUSION PLANT RADIOACTIVE EFFLUENTS CEMENTS FLY ASH GROUTING SLAGS TECHNETIUM 99 AEROSOL WASTES ASHES BETA DECAY RADIOISOTOPES BETA-MINUS DECAY RADIOISOTOPES BUILDING MATERIALS DISSOLUTION GASEOUS DIFFUSION PLANTS HOURS LIVING RADIOISOTOPES INDUSTRIAL PLANTS INTERMEDIATE MASS NUCLEI ISOMERIC TRANSITION ISOTOPES ISOTOPE SEPARATION PLANTS ISOTOPES MATERIALS NATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS NUCLEAR FACILITIES NUCLEI ODD-EVEN NUCLEI PHASE TRANSFORMATIONS RADIOACTIVE MATERIALS RADIOACTIVE WASTES RADIOISOTOPES RESIDUES SEPARATION PROCESSES TECHNETIUM ISOTOPES US DOE US ERDA US ORGANIZATIONS WASTES YEARS LIVING RADIOISOTOPES 052001* - Nuclear Fuels- Waste Processing 053000 - Nuclear Fuels- Environmental = , ![]()
